Just to offer up my own outlook on this:
The star that guided the Magi from the East was not a physical star in the material heavens, but rather a spiritual star imperceptible to those uninitiated.
Only the initiated Magi could perceive the light of the incarnating Christ descending from the higher realms.
It is folly to look for the star with astronomical methods. The star was Christ.

It should first and foremost be looked at from an astrology view as the entire biblical story (including Christ) is a metaphorical story having to do with everything astronomy and the truth .

To claim that Christ and the entire biblical story are mere metaphor is to fall into the deception of viewing the most important spiritual event in human evolution as a physical/material phenomena observable by the senses. That is evil to the core. Truth is not located in the observation and movements of material stars, but rather in the spiritual beings and processes existing behind those physical stars.
