Dog Deaths in Michigan

Q. “I read about an illness in Michigan which has killed around 30 dogs. It seems to come on suddenly and the dogs die quickly. It has mainly been affecting dogs under 2 years of age, but the vets are not sure what it is. It looks and acts like parvo, but the parvo tests are coming back negative. They are advising people to avoid having their dogs around other dogs and to avoid taking them out for walks until they are sure what this is and hopefully can find a way to treat it. They think that it may be a new mutation of parvo. “

Is this a brand new thing?
Is it a real thing?
What is the best preventative measure?

A. As I focus on this, I get it is an old illness that has mutated.  That is why the current tests aren't working properly (I get they sometimes do, and sometimes don't)  I see that time, combined with the various preventative "shots," this illness has evolved to be more resilient.  Younger dogs that haven't had all the boosters, etc, feel to be more at risk because they have the least antibodies overall against this virus.

I do see this as real, but it doesn't feel to be epidemic.  I get this is most concerning if you board your dog and they are in close quarters  Check the hygiene of the facility and ensure waste is picked up regularly.

I also see it tied more to exposing your pet to the feces of an infected dog (which would be rare when just walking down the street or playing in your yard).  AND if you encounter another dog's feces, don't panic, just don't let you dog around it if you see it (and odds are it isn't contaminated because as I said, this isn't epidemic..)

Lastly, stay current on the parvo shot.  I see this as ok for your pet, and the benefit of the shot outweighs the harm if the illness is contracted.

Overall, carry on and love you pet.  Practice good hygiene (especially in the city or closer quarters) and watch out for those that may not..  Don't be paranoid, just aware.

And that's all I have for this reading.  Thank you.  Love and light, Lynn

What great read for dog owners which should be more widely disseminated. I find the mutation of parvo and pathway of infection aspect very interesting.

Why are animal v@ccin@tions safer than the ones made for humans? Ex. rabies shot for dog and for human

@Robert: Thanks.

@Ice: The older ones feel to be safer, whereas anything new (ie flu or beer bug for a pet = run).

Thank you, this is very interesting. I read a study a while ago (I could probably find it if anyone cares) where they tested a bunch of human and animal “shots” for heavy metals, and the human shots were full of all kind of strange metals that they called “industrial waste” and the pet shots didn’t have any. They said it must have been a coincidence. Haha.

A bit offtopic, but you got to check this out:

It's a new series coming to Netflix in France. The plot is about a racial war between colored immigrants and the native French people breaking out.

Truth in plain sight? This is probably one of their goals with the massive immigration.

@Trainwreck: Yeah... coincidence... I don't believe in coincidence.

@enlightened one: I think it is a goal. They want to destabilize countries.
