Effectiveness of Sage v. Palo Santo v. Spray Sage

Q. Hi Lynn,

Does sage really cleanse the air in your home? I knew people used it and it was a tradition that came from Native Americans.  I recently read that it actually does purify the air and that it isn't just spiritual. Is that true?

If sage is a good thing, is there a certain kind to get and how do you do it? For example, I usually buy something called white sage, and they sell sage in kits with an abalone shell and a feather. It seems like a pleasant ritual.

Also, does sage spray work, or is that a gimmick?

Finally, I was also wondering about the properties of Palo Santo wood and if it is like sage or if it is different. I have been told it is more for bringing in good intentions rather than cleansing. I like it a little better than sage, since it has a sort of sweet smell.

A.  This is a great set of questions and these are things I am very familiar with and use during clearing and cleansing practices.  It is possible to cleanse and clear a space with intention only, but using tools such as sage and palo santo does help strengthen the intent (or enhance your intent through action) of what you are doing.  I like to work with white sage and cedar when burning the sage because it creates a balance of feminine and masculine energy.  It isn't required, but creates a nice balance (and everything fundamentally works in balance).

I also see that aside from clearing a space or moving negative energy, sage does help to purify the air.  Just remember that a little goes a long way, so super smoking up your space may feel counter productive with regard to purification.

In looking at palo santo versus sage, they work similar in they strengthen what you are doing and palo santo can be an alternative to sage for those that are sensitive (I've met some people that cannot be around burning sage).  Even though both work I would agree that sage feels to move energy easier than palo santo.  Something with the smoke of sage feels to lift through the air easier and get into the tight spaces.   If using these items while meditating or manifesting, I see them being fairly equal.  

Spray sage feels to be much less effective.  It does help to focus an intent, but I don't see it creating a harmony or have the same energetic benefits.
