A. In theory it is similar, but spiritually it is very different. I have personally been having some internal turmoil with exactly this topic so I appreciate the blog suggestion. We've been taught to create vision boards, focus and manifest, but is this the best approach? Let's dive in and you can see how you feel... 
When people pray they are connecting to the Divine Source. You are opening your heart and have a direct relationship with God. You are acknowledging His greatness and asking for His help and guidance. He will look out for your greater good and help guide your moral and internal compass. He will provide you with answers and what you need right when you need it.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
Manifesting on the other hand opens you up to anything. As people visualize and focus on guidance, answers and assistance any entity (good or bad) can come to the rescue. You could be working with an angel or a demon, and manifesting could end with you making an unintended bargain. Our world is full of demonic activity, and these entities are lurking everywhere. Most of the evil of the world got there by manifesting power and greed and making deals with the devil. Some were intentional, but for some the desire was so great for what they wanted they let their ego take over. We have a God gene and internal connection to God, but we are not God himself.

Hello, Lynn. Thank you for the reading. There is clearly a shift in your perspective when compared to your previous reading over the years. When you say 'We are not God' it seems that our relationship with God is one of co-dependency? I can understand the benefits it can bring but wouldn't that risk warping us back into the Matrix? Isn't the end goal to be one with God instead of being separate from Him? You explained Lao Tze was meditating in the mountains and became one with Source. Why is his path so different from a Christian one?

@Kyle: I have been really wrestling with all this. I think the shift in our world and the clear demonic presence has contributed to my perspective. There is God, and there is the Devil, and we are all caught up in the war. When Lao Tze was meditating it was with a goal to connect with Source/God. That is a totally different approach versus meditating just to see what can come through..
I love the philosophical differentiation you make between prayers and manifesting, Lynn, and I think someone determined to accomplish their goals and succeeding is self determination that's different from manifesting and maybe people should try that.
I have grown to think recently they are both necessary and complement each other. Recently I have begun to start each visualization session with a prayer. Both are the same in the sense that you maintain a focus on your mind on your needs and goals, but with prayer the focus is verbal instead of visual. But verbal focus I think is just as effective as visual in terms of manifesting. It can even be more effective because even though a picture can describe one single outcome in greater detail than words can, words can describe a wider array or spectrum of possible outcomes than a picture can. It isn't really true that a picture says more than a thousand words. It's just that the words define the boundaries of a collection of possibilities, while a picture describes one single possibility in detail. If you're not sure how exactly it would render visually if you reached your goals, then verbal manifesting could be better. But the words should be silent, thought rather than spoken. It can also help reprogram your subconscious mind to better suit your goals.
Praying is still important though. It brings us closer to God, where no evil can remain. Thus, it cleanses us from evil. God is also our compass, to help us distinguish good from evil. I like to think of man as an apprentice in the art of using our thoughts and mind as a tool. But God is our teaching master, whose guidance we will need on this path.
You could also liken praying to an application (humans) requesting services from the operating system (God). For humans trying to manage without prayer, would be like a computer program trying to perform it's functions without ever making any requests to the operating system.
People use to pray for help and assistance with everyday issues. But if they want real change and real progress they should pray for wisdom and the ability to see and perceive instead.
Very highly evolved extraterrestrial beings pray to God as well. But they do it without words, by simply maintaining a connection to source in their mind, while focusing on their need.
As to the actual metaphysical workings behind prayers, I have recently started to rethink my previous position on this. I used to think - like most people - that God somehow intervenes with his power to answer to our prayers. But recently I've entertained the possibility that a significant factor to the working of prayers is that being close to God alters our energy matrix, which in turn alters our reality accordingly to our prayer.

@enlightened one: I really liked reading your take on this. In your second comment you mentioned that being closer to God helps to alter your reality. I agree, and for the better. It definitely is a deep thing to think on.
