North Pole Fun His-Story

Q. I suppose this would be a geographical history post... but here goes. As a kid I always remembered there being a white spot on top of the globe and on the bottom. I would draw the white area on top when we had do maps in class, so I was shocked to learn that the snowy land of North Pole doesn’t exist. If you were to go look at the globe now, there’s no white spot there. It’s just blue water. I was gaslighted by some people who laughed and said of course there’s no land up there, it’s just water. BUT the thing that bothered me is...why would Santa live in the North Pole, in the middle of the ocean? That response usually got them to pause and start thinking. We were not raised on a myth story about Santa living on a floating piece of ice! We were always told he lived in a special place in the North Pole, and every image shows his village on a piece of snow covered land. Hmm.

A. As I read this question, I totally agree. The "image" of the earth we saw decades ago included a large land mass on the north pole and a massive land mass on the south pole. This image has since changed and been updated to reflect water and some ice on the north pole. The reason for this is that the images of earth are CGI and the globe model is just not true. It is an artist rendition of what they "think" it is supposed to look like.

There have been many variations of maps over the years. People have traveled the seas and lands. Maps from the Old World were inherited, and the landscapes have changed. Having said that, maps can alter with earth changes and shifts, but we have not experienced a shift like that during our lifetime. Furthermore, I get that you cannot get far enough away from the earth to get a picture of the entire planet, and we only see small parts. EVEN if we sat on the moon, the earth would be too close to see the whole thing.

Everything we see and everything we've taught is assumption and someone's narrative that has stood the test of time. Just as his-story changes, so does the CGI of the image of earth. What was once a land mass covered in snow is now water and ice. The Santa analogy just further supports how we remember this "globe" model versus how we are shown it to be now..
