The one episode of the Star Wars tale that clearly portrays an underlying spiritual message is Empire Strikes Back. It is, in my humble opinion, the best of ALL the episodes, and obviously the darkest in the tale as well. It is free of the Disney-like silliness inserted elsewhere.
The idea of the Hero on a Quest, not only for his own spiritual development, but also to rescue his friends from certain death, thereby cutting short his proper path, with the result of confronting the Darkness too early, is great drama.
No scene is more powerful than Luke being guided by his spiritual Master to a dark Cavern where he must, in essence, face the Guardian of the Threshold. This is a step in the Initiation process where one must look head-on into one's own Karma, and overcome the horror and fear it portrays.
Luke freely chooses to ignore Yoda's warnings of his unreadiness to return to the outside world beyond his swampy school of initiation. He is pulled away by his love and loyalty for his friends, and thus winds up confronting the Dark Lord of Sith ill-prepared, resulting in defeat, the symbolic elimination of his hand, and shocking revelations which shatter his soul.
When Yoda says,"Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter," we know that spiritual knowledge is being espoused here. Unfortunately, as this story continued back and forward in time, the spiritual core was lost, and the tale became just another Hollywood profit-making machine.
Empire Strikes Back possesses something at its core which needs to be reinserted into the motion-picture arena in a fresh tale of romance and adventure, set in a distant galaxy far from all we perceive as normal life here on Earth...something totally devoid of submission before the Dark Lords of Political-Correctness.
Lynn's post above, and my own comment upon it, has brought my thoughts back to the Star Wars films which began in 1977 when I was a kid.
Immersed in some of those thoughts, I recalled an old 1977 paperback book which I had purchased as a teenager, entitled THE FORCE OF STAR WARS. I did a bit of searching, and found it in my bedroom closet, securely hidden from the prying eyes of any curious Imperial probe droids.
Written by a Christian ( FRANK ALLNUTT ), who espouses what I suppose could correctly be described as evangelical and fundamentalist inclinations, the book compares the Star Wars tale with the Christian message of the Bible. Using biblical prophesy, the author also attempts to describe current events ( 1970's ) in the light of the Christian conception of the world and life.
I thought it fascinating, in the light of our own current crisis, how the author described the the end of the Republic ( the traditional, good form of government ) and the creation of Empire ( the evil rule of an elite based upon lies ) through nefarious means. Out of this arises Satan ( Emperor Palpatine ), the Anti-Christ ( Grand Moff Tarkin ), the False Prophet ( Darth Vader ), and their demonic hordes and underlings ( Imperial guards and stormtroopers ).
The Force is pictured as God, Obi-Wan Kenobi as Christ, Luke as the Hebrew Christians, Solo as the Gentile Christians, and Leia and the Alliance as Israel and the Church.
One must recall that powerful scene where Obi-Wan and Vader are having their light-saber duel. Obi-Wan willingly sacrifices his own Life so that Luke and his friends can survive and escape the clutches of Vader, Tarkin, and the Emperor. SACRIFICE is the key here. The idea that one person offers up their own self for the good of others.
Is that not, in essence, the Christian message? One does not need to cling to a particular theological belief, or belong to a particular church denomination, in order to except the idea of SACRIFICE. In fact, I think SACRIFICE is the very objective of the esoteric spiritual path. We are all ultimately, at some future point in our evolution, meant to reach the moment where we freely choose to SACRIFICE up all that we are for those below us in the spiritual stream of cosmic evolution.
SACRIFICE is an act of total selflessness. Perhaps, if we all made more effort to embody Selflessness in our daily lives, we could not only assist the world in moving closer to the ideal Republic, and away from the evil Globalist Empire, but also shift our consciousness closer to the Force/Source/Divine/God.
I know my thoughts are rambling here, but, lastly, I must say, that if the Dark Side "wins" the US presidential election, we who are spiritually inclined all naturally become Rebels. As such, I wonder how many of us are actually capable of the quality of selflessness Kenobi expressed when he diverted Vader's attention, pulled up his saber, and allowed the Darkness to strike him down, in order that others might live and thrive to experience a better future.
