The $170K Question: Profiting from Symptoms, Burying Cures

The other day while at work, I looked over and saw the attached picture for cancer awareness. At first, I glazed over it, but then it dawned on me how much cancer is out there. It was an entire grid of different ribbon colors to support those dealing with the various forms. It then occurred to me that when there is a medical issue (the "beer bug," for example), there is a rush for a shot or pill to mitigate symptoms, but rarely is there ever a cure. In fact I cannot think of the last cure that was released.

Let's just think of all the money donated toward research and then pose the following:

Why hasn't cancer been cured by now? Why aren't autoimmune issues cured? Why hasn't diabetes been eradicated?
