Nature’s Medicine Cabinet: Immune Boosters, Natural Antibiotics, and Antivirals

Not everyone has access to a doctor, and even those who do might not always want to rely [or trust] a pill to fix their problems. I believe that natural remedies are often gentler on the body, and with the right knowledge, we can find many of the healing ingredients we need right in our kitchens or backyards. I’d like to share some homemade antibiotic/antiviral/heal boosting recipes that I’ve personally used with success. Keep in mind that going the natural route requires patience and consistency.  It often means dosing a few times a day and giving your body the time it needs to heal.  [One last tip, when you desire a more natural approach, start the treatment at the first sign of an illness.  Don't wait until it grabs ahold of you.]

The first step to staying healthy is keeping your immune system in balance. You can do this by incorporating a few key nutrients into your routine:
  • Vitamin C: Skip the sugary juices and opt for a quality supplement or vitamin-rich foods instead. Vitamin C is a superstar for giving your immune system a boost.
  • Zinc: This mineral is like a roadblock for viruses, helping to inhibit their replication.
  • Magnesium: It keeps your immune system in check by promoting toxin excretion and supporting overall health.
  • Vitamin D: Known as the sunshine vitamin, it’s essential for a strong and resilient immune response.
  • Vitamin K2: Think of this as your vitamin wingman.  It helps your body absorb and use those other nutrients more effectively.

Next is hydration.  Remember our bodies are over 60% electrolyte which means it is 60% water with other minerals (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonate).  Don't just drink a ton of water which sets the electrolyte off balance, but drink water and add a pinch of things like Himalayan salt to either the water drink or foods you consume to keep the minerals in balance.

If you are encountering a severe illness, fasting is the single best and aggressive way to cleanse the body, start the process of autophagy and jump start the immune system to attack toxins and foreign bodies. (Always do research before being aggressive in this way. I can also coach you through the process.)

Most times I will use many of the following at the same time to really knock out what I have going on:

Tea Tree Oil:  Great for sinus infections and ear infections.  If you are feeling stuffy, headachy or are prone to a sinus infection, put this on your cheeks under your eyes (but not IN your eyes as it will burn).  At the first sign of an earache, put tea tree behind your ear and then put a few drops on a cotton ball and put the cotton ball in your ear.  In both situations do this a few times a day for a few days or until you feel the relief. [Safety Tip:  When handling essential oils if you EVER get it in your eyes or use on your skin and see a sensitivity emerge, immediately dilute with any oil such as coconut, olive, avocado, etc.  Oil can dilute with oil, but oil will not mix with water will just agitate it more.]

Oregano Oil:  This is a powerful antibiotic and can be used for things like strep throat, coughs, sinus, UTI, etc.  You can take it neat, but it is HOT on the tongue.  A veggie capsule is the way to go.  I put about 3 drops of essential oil in a capsule and take three times a day until symptoms are gone.  [Helpful hint:  You can prepare several capsules at one time so you aren't doing the whole process multiple times a day.  If you do this, put in the fridge, otherwise the oils will eat through the veggie capsule at room temperature.  This is a good thing and shows how quickly the capsule will break down for absorption in the body.]

Garlic: Garlic is great for the immune system, and really great for any type of digestive or intestinal issue.  I've also had success with garlic when it comes to sore throats (paired with gargling salt water).  You can take garlic pills or just consume lots of garlic.  Your sweat may smell like spaghetti, but you will feel much better in a few days.

Peppermint Oil:  Peppermint is great for headaches, but also great for stomach issues.  If you have a headache put peppermint on the temples (dilute if you have sensitive skin).  When it comes to digestive ailments, put a few drops on the belly (again, dilute if you have sensitive skin).  Peppermint essential oil is great for fighting fevers by putting a few drops on the inner wrist.

BONUS Mom Hack:  Have you or your kids ever been so sick they cannot keep anything down?  Not even water.  The bottom of the feet are VERY absorbent, so use this to your advantage.  I put a few drops of oregano essential oil, peppermint essential oil, tea tree oil and sometimes frankincense essential oil combined and on the bottom of the feet (dilute if need be).  It is a way to get the healing started without triggering more vomiting.  This has worked great for me in the past.

The above are general recommendations, but if you have something personal going on and are seeking a more natural route to healing, please reach out to me.  We can set up an individualized appointment where I can help you set up a protocol to get you back on the path to your old self!

Happy Healing!

Much Love, Lynn

Don't forget Elderberry syrup. I took some yesterday feeling no energy with this arctic blast and it really helped.

Yes, Elderberry is amazing. I make my own. I think I've shared the recipe a few times on here. That is another go-to I use.

Oregano oil is like a full spectrum antibiotic. It kills EVERYTHING, including the good. Always a good idea to take a probiotic a few hours later. Another way to make it more palatable is to make a Greek salad, or something similar, and add a few drops of it in your salad dressing along with the olive oil and lemon juice.

Great suggestion!
